EIK February Refresher Training Session
Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and Environmental Audit (EA) are fundamental instruments that ensure development projects integrate environmental and social considerations into their planning, implementation, and operational phases. The ultimate goal is to create better projects and contribute to sustainable development.
As ESIA processes are implemented across various projects, concerns have arisen regarding the extent to which projected and actual impacts align. Questions persist about whether ESIA effectively contributes to achieving sustainable development goals. To address these concerns, environmental professionals need to stay informed about emerging issues and trends that shape the field.
Evolution of ESIA and EA
The origins of ESIA can be traced back to the U.S. National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, which set the foundation for assessing environmental impacts before project approval. Over the years, this practice has been embraced globally, with various countries developing their regulatory frameworks to guide environmental assessments.
In Kenya, the Environmental Management and Coordination Act (EMCA), 1999, established a formal ESIA and EA framework, regulated by the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA). This framework ensures that all development projects undergo rigorous assessment to minimize adverse effects on the environment and communities. As environmental challenges continue to evolve due to climate change, technological advancements, and emerging sustainability concerns, ESIA and EA processes are adapting to address these dynamic issues effectively.
Why Attend the Refresher Training?
To keep environmental professionals updated on the latest trends and emerging challenges in ESIA and EA, the Environment Institute of Kenya (EIK) is organizing a specialized Refresher Training on Emerging Issues and Trends in the ESIA/EA Process. This training is designed to equip practitioners with the latest emerging issues in ESIA, best practices, and regulatory updates necessary for effective environmental assessments.
